Giovanni Bologna
Giovanni Bologna, also known as Jean de Boulogne, was a prominent Italian sculptor born in 1529 in Douai, which is now part of France. He moved to Italy, where he became a key figure in the Mannerist style of sculpture. Bologna is best known for his dynamic and expressive works, including the famous statue of Mercury.
His most celebrated piece is the Rape of the Sabine Women, created between 1579 and 1583, which showcases his skill in capturing movement and emotion. Bologna's influence extended beyond his lifetime, impacting later artists and contributing to the development of Baroque sculpture.
