Gilbert de Clare, 1st Earl of Hertford
Gilbert de Clare, 1st Earl of Hertford (c. 1180–1230), was a prominent English nobleman during the medieval period. He was the son of Richard de Clare, 6th Earl of Hertford and Amice de Clare. Gilbert played a significant role in the political landscape of England, particularly during the reign of King John and the early years of King Henry III.
In 1217, he was granted the title of Earl of Hertford, which solidified his status among the English nobility. Gilbert was also involved in the Barons' War, a conflict between rebellious barons and the monarchy, reflecting the turbulent nature of English politics during his lifetime.
