Georges G. Stokes
Georges G. Stokes was a prominent Irish physicist and mathematician, born on March 13, 1819, in Skreen, County Sligo, Ireland. He is best known for his work in fluid dynamics and optics, particularly for formulating Stokes' law, which describes the motion of spheres through viscous fluids. His contributions laid the groundwork for many scientific advancements in these fields.
In addition to his work in physics, Stokes was also a significant figure in mathematics, contributing to the development of vector calculus. He served as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and was a member of the Royal Society, where he was later elected as its president.
