George Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland
George Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland (1758-1833), was a British nobleman and politician. He was born into a prominent family and became the 1st Duke in 1833. Known for his vast estates in Sutherland, Scotland, he played a significant role in the Highland Clearances, a controversial period when many tenants were evicted to make way for sheep farming.
