George Gabriel Stokes was an Irish mathematician and physicist born on July 13, 1819, in Skreen, County Sligo, Ireland. He is best known for his work in fluid dynamics and optics, particularly for the Stokes' law, which describes the motion of spheres through viscous fluids. Stokes also contributed to the field of mathematics with his studies on partial differential equations.
In addition to his scientific achievements, Stokes served as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and was a founding member of the Royal Irish Academy. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1851 and later became its president. Stokes passed away on February 1, 1903.
