George Bass
George Bass was an English explorer and navigator known for his significant contributions to the exploration of Australia in the late 18th century. He was born in 1771 and became famous for his voyages along the southeastern coast of Australia, where he mapped various regions and contributed to the understanding of the continent's geography. His expeditions helped to establish British claims to parts of Australia.
Bass is also recognized for his partnership with Matthew Flinders, another prominent explorer. Together, they conducted important maritime surveys and explored the coastline, including the discovery of Bass Strait, which separates Tasmania from the mainland. Bass's work laid the groundwork for future exploration and settlement in Australia.
