Matthew Flinders
Matthew Flinders was an English navigator and cartographer known for his significant contributions to the exploration of Australia. Born in 1774, he became the first person to circumnavigate the continent, mapping its coastline and identifying many of its geographical features. His work laid the foundation for future exploration and settlement in Australia.
Flinders is also recognized for his role in naming the country. He proposed the name “Australia” in his 1804 publication, which eventually became the accepted term for the continent. His legacy is honored in various ways, including the Flinders Ranges and Flinders University in South Australia.
