General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong
General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong was a Ghanaian military officer and politician who served as the head of state from 1972 to 1978. He came to power through a coup d'état, leading the National Redemption Council, which aimed to address economic challenges and corruption in Ghana. Acheampong's government implemented various policies, including the controversial "Operation Feed Yourself" program to boost agricultural production.
In 1978, Acheampong was overthrown by another military coup led by General Fred Akuffo. Following his removal, he faced trial for his actions during his rule and was eventually sentenced to death. Acheampong's legacy remains a topic of discussion in Ghanaian history, reflecting the complexities of military governance.
