Fuggerei
Fuggerei is a historic social housing complex located in Augsburg, Germany. Founded in 1521 by Jakob Fugger, a wealthy merchant, it was designed to provide affordable housing for the poor. The complex features 67 buildings with 140 apartments, all surrounded by a wall and gardens.
Residents of Fuggerei pay a nominal annual rent of just one Rhenish guilder, which is equivalent to about 0.88 euros today. The community is unique in that it requires tenants to adhere to certain rules, including attending daily prayers at the local church, reflecting its origins in charity and social responsibility.
