Five-Power Treaty
The Five-Power Treaty, signed in 1922, was an agreement among five major naval powers: the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, France, and Italy. Its primary goal was to limit naval armaments and prevent an arms race following World War I. The treaty established ratios for battleship tonnage, promoting disarmament and stability in the Pacific region.
The treaty was part of a series of agreements known as the Washington Naval Conference, which aimed to address growing tensions and competition among these nations. While it successfully limited naval expansion for a time, the treaty's effectiveness diminished as geopolitical tensions rose in the 1930s.
