Filipino American History
Filipino American history began in the late 19th century when the first Filipinos arrived in the United States, primarily as sailors and laborers. The first significant wave occurred in 1906 when the U.S. government established the Philippine Islands as a colony after the Spanish-American War. This led to increased migration, especially to the West Coast, where many worked in agriculture and fishing.
Throughout the 20th century, Filipino Americans faced challenges, including discrimination and exclusionary laws. However, they played vital roles in various movements, such as the labor movement led by figures like Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz. Today, Filipino Americans contribute significantly to American culture and society.
