Father Junípero Serra
Father Junípero Serra was a Spanish Franciscan missionary known for founding several California missions in the 18th century. He played a significant role in spreading Christianity among the Native American populations and is often credited with establishing the first nine missions in California, including the famous Mission San Diego de Alcalá.
Serra's work was not without controversy, as his efforts to convert Native Americans often led to the disruption of their traditional ways of life. Despite this, he is remembered as a key figure in California history and was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 2015, highlighting his lasting impact on the region.
