Factitious Disorders
Factitious Disorders are mental health conditions where individuals intentionally produce or feign physical or psychological symptoms. This behavior is often driven by a desire to assume the role of a patient, gaining attention and sympathy from others. Unlike malingering, where symptoms are faked for external benefits, those with Factitious Disorders are motivated by internal psychological needs.
People with Factitious Disorders may go to great lengths to create or exaggerate symptoms, including falsifying medical histories or undergoing unnecessary medical procedures. Treatment typically involves psychotherapy to address underlying psychological issues and help individuals develop healthier coping mechanisms.
