Esophageal Spasm
Esophageal spasm is a condition where the muscles of the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach, contract abnormally. This can lead to chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and a sensation of food being stuck in the throat. The spasms can be triggered by stress, certain foods, or temperature changes in food and drinks.
There are two main types of esophageal spasms: diffuse esophageal spasm and nutcracker esophagus. Diffuse esophageal spasm involves irregular contractions, while nutcracker esophagus features strong, coordinated contractions. Treatment options may include medications, dietary changes, and in some cases, procedures to help manage symptoms.
