Enchondroma
An enchondroma is a type of benign tumor that develops from cartilage tissue, typically found within the bones. These tumors are most commonly located in the small bones of the hands and feet but can also occur in larger bones. Enchondromas often grow slowly and may not cause any symptoms, making them difficult to detect without imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs.
While enchondromas are generally non-cancerous, they can sometimes lead to complications, such as fractures or pain if they weaken the bone structure. In rare cases, they may transform into malignant tumors, such as chondrosarcoma. Regular monitoring and, if necessary, surgical removal are common management strategies for symptomatic cases.
