Emperor Go-Daigo
Emperor Go-Daigo was the 96th emperor of Japan, reigning from 1318 to 1339. He is known for his efforts to restore imperial power during the Kamakura period, a time when the shogunate held significant control over the government. His reign marked the beginning of the Nanboku-chō period, a time of civil strife and conflict between rival imperial courts.
Go-Daigo attempted to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate and establish a new government, leading to the Genkō War. His ambitions ultimately resulted in his temporary exile, but he returned to power and continued to influence Japanese politics until his death in 1339.
