Go-Daigo
Go-Daigo was a Japanese emperor who reigned from 1318 to 1339. He is known for his efforts to restore the imperial power during the Nanboku-chō period, a time marked by political strife and civil war. Go-Daigo sought to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate and reestablish direct imperial rule, which had been weakened by military leaders.
His reign was characterized by conflict, including the Genkō War, where he faced opposition from the shogunate. Despite initial successes, Go-Daigo was eventually defeated and exiled. His legacy includes the eventual rise of the Ashikaga shogunate and the establishment of a new political order in Japan.
