Efraín Ríos Montt
Efraín Ríos Montt was a Guatemalan military officer and politician who served as the de facto President of Guatemala from 1982 to 1983. He came to power during a period of intense civil conflict and is known for implementing policies aimed at counterinsurgency. His government was marked by significant human rights violations, including the targeting of indigenous communities.
Ríos Montt was later tried for genocide and crimes against humanity related to his actions during the civil war. In 2013, he was found guilty and sentenced to 80 years in prison, although the verdict was annulled shortly after. His legacy remains controversial in Guatemala and beyond.
