Eastern Hellbender
The Eastern Hellbender is a large aquatic salamander native to the rivers and streams of the eastern United States. It can grow up to 29 inches long and is known for its wrinkled skin, which helps with respiration. This species prefers clean, fast-flowing water and is often found under large rocks.
Hellbenders are primarily nocturnal and feed on small fish, crayfish, and other aquatic invertebrates. They play a crucial role in their ecosystem by helping to control the populations of these organisms. Unfortunately, the Eastern Hellbender is considered a threatened species due to habitat loss and pollution.
