Eastern Cottonmouth
The Eastern Cottonmouth, also known as Agkistrodon piscivorus, is a venomous snake found primarily in the southeastern United States. It typically inhabits wetlands, swamps, and rivers, where it can be seen basking on rocks or logs. This snake is recognizable by its thick body, dark coloration, and distinctive white mouth, which it displays when threatened.
Eastern Cottonmouths are semi-aquatic and are excellent swimmers. They primarily feed on fish, amphibians, and small mammals. While their venom is potent, they usually prefer to avoid human contact and will only bite in self-defense. Proper caution is advised when encountering this species in the wild.
