Earthquake Intensity
Earthquake intensity measures the effects of an earthquake at specific locations, indicating how strongly people feel the shaking and the damage caused. It is often assessed using the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, which ranges from I (not felt) to XII (total destruction). This scale considers factors like building damage, changes in the landscape, and human perception.
Intensity differs from magnitude, which quantifies the energy released at the earthquake's source. While magnitude is a single value for an earthquake, intensity can vary widely across different areas due to local geology, distance from the epicenter, and building structures.
