EPOC (Exercise)
EPOC, or Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption, refers to the increased rate of oxygen intake following strenuous activity. This phenomenon occurs as the body works to restore itself to pre-exercise levels, including replenishing energy stores and repairing muscle tissue. The duration and intensity of the exercise influence the extent of EPOC, with higher intensity workouts typically resulting in a greater oxygen deficit.
During EPOC, the body continues to burn calories even after the workout has ended. This process can last from several minutes to hours, depending on the exercise's intensity and duration. Incorporating high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can effectively enhance EPOC, leading to improved fitness and weight management.
