Dutch Military History
Dutch military history spans several centuries, beginning with the formation of the Dutch Republic in the late 16th century. The Eighty Years' War against Spain marked a significant period, leading to the establishment of the Republic as a major European power. The Dutch military became known for its naval prowess, particularly during the Anglo-Dutch Wars.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch East India Company expanded overseas, necessitating a strong military presence. The Napoleonic Wars later influenced Dutch military structure, leading to the formation of the modern Royal Netherlands Army and Royal Netherlands Navy in the 19th century, which continue to serve today.
