Double Asteroids
Double asteroids are celestial bodies consisting of two closely orbiting components, typically referred to as a primary and a secondary. These pairs can vary in size, with the primary being larger and the secondary often being a smaller companion. They are classified as a type of binary asteroid and are found throughout the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
The gravitational interaction between the two bodies keeps them in a stable orbit around each other. Studying double asteroids helps scientists understand the formation and evolution of asteroids and provides insights into the history of our solar system. Notable examples include Didymos and its moonlet Dimorphos.
