Diggers Movement
The Diggers Movement was a 17th-century group in England that emerged during the English Civil War. Founded by figures like Gerrard Winstanley, the movement advocated for communal land ownership and the right to cultivate land for the benefit of all, rather than for profit. They believed that land should be shared equally among people, challenging the existing social and economic hierarchies.
The Diggers set up small communities, particularly on common land, where they practiced their ideals of communal living and agriculture. Their activities were met with resistance from landowners and authorities, leading to conflicts that ultimately diminished their influence. Despite this, the Diggers' ideas have inspired later social movements advocating for equality and land rights.
