Dermatobia Hominis
Dermatobia hominis, commonly known as the human botfly, is a parasitic insect found primarily in Central and South America. The adult female botfly lays its eggs on a mosquito or other biting insect, which then transfers the eggs to a human host when it bites. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow into the skin, causing painful lesions.
The larvae develop under the skin for several weeks, feeding on the host's tissue. While the infestation can be uncomfortable and may lead to secondary infections, it is generally not life-threatening. Treatment typically involves the removal of the larvae by a healthcare professional.
