Democracy in Myanmar
Democracy in Myanmar has faced significant challenges, particularly since the military coup in February 2021. Prior to the coup, the country had made strides towards democratic governance, especially after the 2015 elections, which were won by the National League for Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
The military takeover disrupted the democratic process, leading to widespread protests and a violent crackdown on dissent. As a result, many political leaders were detained, and the military reasserted control, raising concerns about human rights and the future of democracy in Myanmar.
