Decembrist Revolt
The Decembrist Revolt was a failed uprising that took place in Russia on December 14, 1825. A group of military officers, known as the Decembrists, protested against the autocratic rule of Tsar Nicholas I and sought to implement constitutional reforms. They were influenced by Enlightenment ideas and the example of the French Revolution.
The revolt occurred in St. Petersburg when the Decembrists refused to swear allegiance to Nicholas I after the death of his brother, Alexander I. The uprising was quickly suppressed by loyal troops, leading to the execution of several leaders and the exile of others to Siberia. The Decembrist Revolt is significant in Russian history as an early expression of revolutionary sentiment.
