Cyprus dispute
The Cyprus dispute is a long-standing conflict between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots on the island of Cyprus. The division began in 1974 when Turkey invaded the northern part of the island in response to a coup aimed at uniting Cyprus with Greece. This led to the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is only recognized by Turkey.
Efforts to reunify the island have been ongoing, with various negotiations and peace plans proposed over the years. The United Nations has been involved in mediating discussions, but a lasting solution has yet to be achieved, leaving the island divided to this day.
