Conflict Diamonds
Conflict diamonds, also known as blood diamonds, are precious stones mined in war zones and sold to finance armed conflict against governments. These diamonds often come from regions where human rights abuses, forced labor, and violence are prevalent, particularly in parts of Africa.
To combat the trade of conflict diamonds, the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme was established in 2003. This international initiative aims to ensure that diamond purchases do not contribute to violence or human rights violations. However, challenges remain in enforcing the process and preventing the sale of diamonds from conflict areas.
