Common Hogweed
Common Hogweed, scientifically known as Heracleum sphondylium, is a large herbaceous plant native to Europe and parts of Asia. It typically grows between 3 to 10 feet tall and features broad, serrated leaves and large clusters of white flowers that bloom in summer. The plant thrives in moist, disturbed areas such as roadsides and riverbanks.
While it may appear attractive, Common Hogweed can be harmful. Its sap contains photosensitive compounds that can cause severe skin reactions when exposed to sunlight. This can lead to painful blisters and long-lasting scars, making it important to handle the plant with care.
