Colorado class
The Colorado class is a type of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine used by the United States Navy. Designed for stealth and endurance, these submarines can carry up to 16 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), specifically the Trident II. The class is an upgrade from the previous Ohio class submarines, featuring advanced technology for improved communication and navigation.
The first submarine of the Colorado class, the USS Colorado (SSBN-788), was commissioned in 2018. These submarines play a crucial role in the U.S. nuclear deterrent strategy, ensuring a second-strike capability in the event of a nuclear conflict. Their design emphasizes survivability and operational flexibility in various maritime environments.
