CoBrA
CoBrA was an avant-garde art movement founded in 1948 by artists from Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. The name "CoBrA" is derived from the initials of these cities. The movement emphasized spontaneity, experimentation, and the use of vibrant colors, often drawing inspiration from children's art and primitive cultures.
The CoBrA group sought to challenge traditional artistic conventions and promote a more expressive form of art. Key figures included artists like Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, and Pierre Alechinsky. The movement was short-lived, officially disbanding in 1951, but it significantly influenced later developments in modern art.
