Clavulanic Acid
Clavulanic Acid is a beta-lactam compound that is primarily used as a medication to enhance the effectiveness of certain antibiotics. It works by inhibiting the action of beta-lactamase enzymes produced by some bacteria, which can otherwise render antibiotics ineffective. This makes it particularly useful in treating infections caused by resistant bacteria.
Often combined with Amoxicillin, a common antibiotic, Clavulanic Acid helps to broaden the spectrum of bacterial infections that can be treated. This combination is frequently found in medications like Augmentin, which is prescribed for various infections, including respiratory and urinary tract infections.
