Chronic Wasting Disease
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a progressive neurological disorder that affects members of the deer family, including white-tailed deer, elk, and moose. It is caused by abnormal proteins called prions, which lead to brain damage and ultimately death. Infected animals may show symptoms such as weight loss, lack of coordination, and changes in behavior.
CWD is primarily spread through direct contact between animals or through contaminated environments. It poses a significant concern for wildlife management and conservation efforts, as there is currently no known cure or vaccine. Monitoring and controlling the spread of CWD is essential to protect affected populations.
