Cholestyramine
Cholestyramine is a medication primarily used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. It works by binding to bile acids in the intestines, preventing their reabsorption. This process helps the body use cholesterol to produce more bile acids, thereby reducing overall cholesterol levels.
In addition to its cholesterol-lowering effects, Cholestyramine can also be used to treat certain types of diarrhea caused by bile acid malabsorption. It is available in powder form, which is mixed with water or other liquids before consumption. Common side effects may include constipation and stomach discomfort.
