Charles the Bold
Charles the Bold (1433-1477) was the Duke of Burgundy, known for his ambition to expand his territory and power in Europe. He was the last Valois Duke and sought to create a powerful state that would rival France and the Holy Roman Empire. His reign was marked by military campaigns and political alliances, as he aimed to consolidate his rule over the Burgundian Netherlands.
Charles was a patron of the arts and culture, contributing to the flourishing of Burgundian Renaissance during his time. However, his aggressive policies led to conflicts, particularly with Louis XI of France. His defeat at the Battle of Nancy in 1477 ultimately resulted in the fragmentation of his duchy and the end of the Valois line.
