Centralia Mine Fire
The Centralia Mine Fire is an underground coal fire that has been burning since May 1962 in Centralia, Pennsylvania. The fire started when a landfill fire ignited a coal seam, leading to a series of underground fires that spread through the extensive network of coal mines in the area.
As a result of the fire, the town of Centralia has experienced significant ground subsidence, hazardous gas emissions, and health risks for residents. By the 1980s, most of the town's population had relocated, and the government eventually declared the area a disaster zone, leading to the abandonment of Centralia.
