Catha Edulis
Catha Edulis, commonly known as khat, is a flowering plant native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Its leaves contain stimulant compounds, primarily cathinone and cathine, which can produce effects similar to those of amphetamines when chewed or brewed as tea. Khat has been used for centuries in traditional social and cultural practices.
The plant typically grows in tropical and subtropical climates, reaching heights of up to 10 meters. While khat is legal in some countries, it is classified as a controlled substance in others due to its potential for abuse and health risks, including addiction and mental health issues.
