Catechol
Catechol is an organic compound that belongs to the class of chemicals known as phenols. It has a chemical formula of C6H6O2 and consists of a benzene ring with two hydroxyl (–OH) groups attached to adjacent carbon atoms. This structure gives catechol its unique properties, making it useful in various applications, including the production of dyes, fragrances, and pharmaceuticals.
In nature, catechol is found in several plants and is involved in the biosynthesis of important compounds. It can also be produced synthetically for industrial use. Due to its reactivity, catechol is used in chemical reactions, such as polymerization and as a reducing agent in laboratories.
