Cartilage Components
Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue found in various parts of the body, including joints, ears, and the nose. It is primarily composed of cells called chondrocytes, which produce a matrix made up of collagen fibers and proteoglycans. This matrix provides strength and elasticity, allowing cartilage to withstand pressure and maintain its shape.
There are three main types of cartilage: hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage, and fibrocartilage. Hyaline cartilage is the most common type, found in the ribs and the respiratory tract. Elastic cartilage provides flexibility, as seen in the ear, while fibrocartilage is tough and durable, found in intervertebral discs and the pubic symphysis.
