Caravaggisti
The term "Caravaggisti" refers to artists who were influenced by the style of the Italian painter Caravaggio. Active primarily in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, these artists adopted his dramatic use of light and shadow, known as chiaroscuro, to create intense emotional scenes. They often focused on religious themes, depicting figures in a realistic and relatable manner.
Many Caravaggisti emerged across Europe, particularly in Italy, France, and the Netherlands. Notable followers include Artemisia Gentileschi and Georges de La Tour, who incorporated Caravaggio's techniques into their own works. This movement significantly impacted the development of Baroque art.
