C/2013 R1 (Lovejoy)
C/2013 R1, commonly known as Comet Lovejoy, is a long-period comet discovered by Australian astronomer Terry Lovejoy on September 7, 2013. It is notable for its bright appearance and was visible to the naked eye during its closest approach to the Sun in January 2014.
The comet has an orbital period of approximately 8,000 years, meaning it will not return to the inner solar system for many millennia. As it approached the Sun, it displayed a spectacular tail and coma, making it a popular target for both amateur and professional astronomers.
