Brood VII
Brood VII is a group of periodical cicadas that emerge every 17 years in the eastern United States. This brood is part of the Magicicada genus, which includes several species known for their synchronized life cycles. The last emergence of Brood VII occurred in 2004, and the next is expected in 2021.
These cicadas spend most of their lives underground as nymphs, feeding on tree roots. When they finally emerge, they molt into adults, mate, and lay eggs before dying shortly after. Their loud mating calls and distinctive appearance make them a notable part of the ecosystem during their brief life above ground.
