Periodical Cicadas
Periodical cicadas are unique insects known for their synchronized life cycles, emerging every 13 or 17 years. They spend most of their lives underground as nymphs, feeding on tree roots. When the time is right, they emerge in large numbers, shedding their exoskeletons and transforming into adults.
These cicadas are famous for their loud mating calls, produced by males to attract females. After mating, females lay eggs in tree branches, and the cycle begins anew. Their emergence can create a spectacular natural event, significantly impacting local ecosystems and providing food for various predators.
