Brazilian Military Government
The Brazilian Military Government refers to a period of military rule in Brazil from 1964 to 1985. It began with a coup d'état that overthrew the democratically elected president João Goulart. The military justified their takeover by claiming it was necessary to combat communism and political instability.
During this time, the government implemented strict censorship, suppressed political opposition, and violated human rights. Economic policies led to initial growth but later resulted in significant social inequality. The military regime ended in 1985, leading to a return to civilian rule and the establishment of a democratic government.
