Brake Fade
Brake fade is a reduction in braking performance that occurs when the brakes overheat. This overheating can happen during prolonged or heavy braking, such as when driving downhill or during high-speed stops. As the brake components heat up, the friction material can lose its effectiveness, leading to a longer stopping distance.
The primary cause of brake fade is the breakdown of the brake pads and brake fluid under high temperatures. When the pads become too hot, they can produce gas or lose their grip on the brake rotor, resulting in a spongy or unresponsive brake pedal. Regular maintenance can help prevent brake fade.
