Bougainville Island
Bougainville Island is the largest island in the Solomon Islands archipelago, located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It covers an area of approximately 9,300 square kilometers and is known for its lush landscapes, including mountains, forests, and beautiful beaches. The island has a diverse ecosystem and is home to various plant and animal species.
The island is politically part of Papua New Guinea and has a unique cultural heritage, with indigenous communities that speak several languages. Bougainville has a history of conflict, particularly during the Bougainville Civil War in the 1990s, but it is now on a path toward greater autonomy and development.
