Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior
Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior (BFRB) refers to a group of related disorders characterized by repetitive, compulsive actions that involve the body. Common examples include trichotillomania (hair pulling), dermatillomania (skin picking), and nail biting. These behaviors often serve as a coping mechanism for stress, anxiety, or boredom, and can lead to physical damage and emotional distress.
Individuals with BFRBs may find it challenging to control their urges, leading to significant impairment in daily functioning. Treatment options often include therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and support groups, which aim to help individuals manage their behaviors and improve their quality of life.
