Bishop Samuel Seabury
Bishop Samuel Seabury was the first bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States. Born in 1729 in Connecticut, he played a crucial role in establishing the church after the American Revolution. Seabury was consecrated as a bishop in 1784 in Scotland, as the Church of England would not consecrate him due to his support for American independence.
Seabury is known for his efforts to adapt the Anglican tradition to the American context. He authored the first American Book of Common Prayer, which incorporated elements of both Anglican and American worship. His leadership helped shape the identity of the Episcopal Church in the new nation.
